I have been in Alaska for about 6 weeks now, and so far things are going pretty well. For the most part I have been extremely overwhelmed with the amount of prep I have. I have six different classes to prepare for each day. The planning time that takes is crazy long. I am still working on a system that works well for me and the students. It is just going to take time, but I am enjoying the job.
I enjoy the job because of two things. First of all, the students are, for the most part, pretty awesome. Kids will be kids and they are no different here than anywhere else. There are some that just don’t really want to be at school and that is understandable. But mostly the kids are amazing. They make my day interesting. No two are ever the same. The second part that makes my job fun is what I teach. I taught ESL for three years in South Korea, and while that was fun, ESL was not my favorite thing. However, I love history. I get to teach some great stuff every day and I love it.
It makes a huge difference when you do something you love. I can’t imagine teaching another subject and liking it near as much as I do history. Not only do I get to teach something I love, but I’m learning all the time.
I hope to start writing more in order to give me an excuse to get out and use my camera more. I have a few posts in the works and hope to some day soon get out on the river.
Till next time,
I taught ESL for three years in South Korea and now I am looking to set out on a new journey after just finishing my teaching certification in the US. I hope to continue teaching and traveling and you can follow his journeys here.
