Seoul Bus Explosion

by admin on August 10, 2010

About 95 percent of the buses in Seoul run on Natural Gas.  Yesterday that was a bad thing.

As a bus was pulling up to a red light, one of its gas tanks exploded.  Seventeen people, including 6 pedestrians, were injured.  One person needed surgery (she was sitting over the tank and needed surgery on her ankles).  The blast was strong enough to break windows of nearby businesses.

The city will investigate to make sure there is not a defect in the tanks.  If there is, all buses with tanks manufactured in the same year will need replacing.

Eric, that’s an ugly scene on the video. I think toxic dust, toxic gases, deafening explosion, long-term health consequences.
I totally understand people wanting to get away from there. Just curious, what is the law, or what is expected, in Korea from people at the scene of an accident–help the injured, call emergency services, . . .?
Thanks, Russ

That is a scary video, fortunately no one was killed.

Yeah it was really a crazy video. It’s amazing that something like that can explode with so many people around and many people aren’t seriously injured.

Russ,
I really don’t know but I am going to ask around. People here tend to be hands off when others need help. I think the guy on the scooter sums up Koreans when there is an accident though – turn around and leave like nothing happened. I have seen a motorcycle hit a car and everyone just watched and didn’t help as the guy just laid there bleeding.

Thanks, Eric, I thought I was seeing a cultural thing. I appreciate it. Russ http://scribblerstravels.com/
