Sunrise in the Land of the Morning Calm

Seeing a sunrise come up over the water is something everyone should see and something I have always wanted to experience.  When I found out that there was a temple on the coast in Busan, I knew I would have to venture out one weekend to take in the sunrise.  I wasn’t disappointed.

Last week during the school’s vacation, I met up with a couple of my co-workers to take in the sunrise.  I headed down to Busan early on Thursday to get some Mexican food (The Fuzzy Navel has some great tacos) and to check out the beach for a bit.  I got down there about noon and immediately headed out to the beach.  I grabbed a bite to eat and then went down to check out the madness that is Haeundae beach.  People were stacked on top of each other as a string of umbrellas stretched across the beach.

After heading to the beach, I headed out to Sajik Baseball Stadium to watch a Lotte Giants game.  The stadium was nice and the game was exciting.  I really enjoyed the game and the stadium.  You can read more about my trip to the stadium on my other site Baseball Journeyman.

The highlight was the trip to Haedong Yonggungsa Temple.  It sits on the coast in east Busan and the views are amazing. It’s not the best temple I have seen in Korea, but it has the best location by far.  The sunrise was scheduled for about 5:30am so we headed out from out hotel around 4:30.  We wanted to get there in time to find a good spot to watch the sun come up over the water, and it was well worth it.

We picked a good clear morning to be there.  The colors as it came up were stunning.  Reds, purples, oranges, and yellows mixed in with the clear blue of the water made for some amazing scenery.  I really can’t begin to describe what we saw, but I now understand why Japan has a red sun on its flag.  The red ball of fire we saw early in the morning sky was amazing.  Add in the fact that the moon was visible as well made for a special morning.

If you ever have the chance, take the time to see the sunrise come up over the water if you can.  It was an amazing sight that I will never forget.  I am no professional photographer, but I enjoyed trying to capture the moment.  Below are a few of the photos I took.  If you want to see more, check out my Flickr page.

Ahhh, South Korea! Busan is still my first choice city to teach in if it all comes down to that (which seems more likely everyday, honestly). But HOLY congested beach!

SK is great. I am definitely coming back – or maybe Taiwan. But yeah Busan is really nice. That is the busiest beach but there are more off the beaten path beaches. I think they set a world record for the most umbrellas or something one year.
